Summer is due today, at precisely 3:34 this afternoon. As I walked around the yard this morning I heard the titters of anticipation.
Hummer showed up around the garden yesterday. He had disappeared for a month or so. We were worried when he didn’t show up for the grand opening of the pink powderpuff tree earlier this month. He wasn’t about to miss the arrival of his favorite flower, the blue sage.
He likes those blue flowers, he was here earlier in Spring, lording over a fully blown rosemary bush.
My husband and I decided to celebrate the day by taking our bicycle out for a spin, pick up some groceries before the day wore on. The air was already getting pretty warm at 8:30. Good for the tomatoes!
We didn’t do nearly as well with tomatoes last year. We ran out of sauce back in March or so. We bought a BIG can of stewed tomatoes at Cash and Carry and I dumped it into a pot and mashed them up with a potato masher, made some passable chunky sauce. But we could taste the can, it’s just not the same, we been waiting for that first pot of homegrown sauce.
Spring comes on fresh and pretty, all those bright colors, loud storms, wet and splashy. Summer slows everything down to a simmer.
